A great new addition…
Ultimate Ears has never let us down, and now isn’t the time to start.
The MEGABOOM 3 is another solid, 5-star wireless speaker that builds upon its previous iteration. Whilst keeping everything we loved about the previous generation, it boasts the powerful sound we’ve come to expect from UE products, whilst offering excellent durability and features.
So, what has UE brought to the table this time?
Let’s go through our in-depth UE MEGABOOM 3 Review and find out…
The MEGABOOM has a reputation for being outdoorsy, and this one is no different. These speakers are built rugged to withstand all the forces of nature.
The MEGABOOM 3 comes with an upgraded IP-67 rating, which makes it dustproof and waterproof, and capable of being submerged for up to 30 minutes.
Not that it would ever be submerged, because these speakers float!
This makes them perfect boat or poolside companions since you never have to worry about diving down to find your speaker.
So, what else is new?
Well, UE have removed the large strip that housed the volume buttons, to give it a sleeker look, but also allowing some extra space for the sound. The dual-tone finish and flat tops make the MEGABOOM 3 look much more sophisticated than the MEGABOOM 2, nudging it closer to the modern look so many speakers have adopted like JBL with their Charge and Flip range.
The speaker itself feels durable but stays light enough to be carried around in a backpack.
UE has also moved the charging port from the bottom, which was infuriating, to say the least, to the side for more convenient charging.
They have also added what they call a “magic button,” on top of the speaker. This button is used to play, pause, and skip tracks by using different tapping gestures. There is even a command to start playing one of your favorite playlists by long pressing it.
UE’s dedicated app is where all this magic happens. There you can set up your favorite playlists and cycle through them by long pressing.
The app also allows for party/stereo mode. This is to connect multiple UE speakers together for some extra oomph. You can connect 2 MEGABOOM 3’s for a stereo speaker experience, great if you want to watch something on the TV, but don’t have a sound system already.
The speaker boasts UE’s signature sound. It’s fun, lively, and perfectly suited for large gatherings.
That said, there have been a few tweaks made here and there…
The 360-degree sound is larger than ever. These speakers easily fill a room with sound, leaving your guests amazed when they find out it’s only one lonely speaker in the middle of the room.
However, the speaker does start to break down a bit at extremely high volumes, but chances are you won’t ever need to push it to the max.
A nice tight low end…
Another small tweak that has been made is to the low end. UE has refined and slightly boosted the lower frequencies a bit. They have also made some adjustments to the passive radiator, enhancing the feel and overall tightness of the bass.
Put next to one of UE’s other speakers, the MegaBlast; it is clear that there is a lot of extra low end, resulting in a warmer sound. The MegaBlast sounds quite thin when compared to the MEGABOOM 3.
That said, all this bass doesn’t take away any clarity from the mid and high-range frequencies, leaving most listeners in awe.
Fun and practical…
UE’s MEGABOOM 3 has a great, addictive sound that is fun for everybody. Is it a true to mix sound? By no means, but that doesn’t make it terrible sounding.
Most wireless speakers aren’t made for in-depth listening experiences. They are made for convenience. That said, UE’s MEGABOOM 3 has made a lasting impact on us.
Battery Life and Connectivity
The speaker connects wirelessly with Bluetooth. And they have extended the range from 30 meters to 45 meters – an impressive distance.
We had no problems using the speaker inside or outside. We left our mobile phone inside and carried the speaker to the garden without any interruptions at all. So, no matter what the situation, you won’t be having connectivity problems.
There is no aux input, which means the speaker can only be used wirelessly. If you want a speaker that does support auxiliary inputs, then the JBL Charge 4 features a 3.5mm jack at a similar price and performance level.
The speaker is charged up using micro-USB, which is a bit of letdown since most manufacturers have moved on to USB-C. This also means fast charging isn’t an option.
Average playback time…
The MEGABOOM 3 offers just under 20 hours of playback on a full charge. Charging it full takes five hours and 30 minutes. This is quite a long charging time, which is why it’s a good idea buying the companion charging dock.
The charging dock will keep your MEGABOOM 3 charged fully all day, ready when you want to take it somewhere other than your home. Not to mention it looks pretty cool docked.
Who is the MEGABOOM 3 for?
This speaker is perfect for anyone shopping for a more premium, larger wireless speaker. If you want a durable speaker that can go with you kayaking, camping, or to poolside parties, look no further.
It boasts an exciting, lively sound that is pleasing to the masses. The 360-degree sound fills rooms up easily, and the speaker is loud enough for any upcoming house parties.
