The Meaning Behind The Song: Ma Asita – מה עשית by Miri Mesika

As a music teacher, I am always on the lookout for new songs that not only sound great but also have deep and meaningful lyrics. One such song that has captivated me is “Ma Asita – מה עשית” by the talented Israeli singer, Miri Mesika. I vividly remember stumbling upon this song at a friend’s house, and ever since then, it has held a special place in my heart.

The Lyrics

The lyrics of “Ma Asita” carry a sense of introspection and raw emotions. They beautifully express the vast range of human experiences, particularly the pain and confusion that often accompanies love and heartbreak. Let’s delve deeper into the meaning behind these poignant words.

The song opens with the lines, “הצבע חזר אל הלחיים אדום, אני שלמה בחום” (The color returned to life, red, I am whole with warmth). These lines hint at a sense of new beginnings and a rekindling of passion. After a period of stagnancy, the protagonist’s life is infused with vibrancy and warmth.

The following lines, “אחרי שנים של שינה לא שעונה על אף חלום, בכל פינה זכרונות, צריך לבנות מחדש” (After years of sleep that failed to answer any dream, memories in every corner, we must rebuild), reflect on the struggles and challenges faced. It signifies the need to confront one’s past, let go of the old, and start afresh.

The chorus of the song, “יעברו אנשים ששווים לחזור הביתה אל האור, וכל העיר נצבעת ברמזור, לי לא נחוץ עוד תירוץ כדי ללכת אליו, הוא נכנס לי ללב כשהפנת לי גב” (People who are worth going home to the light will pass, and the whole city is colored in signals, I no longer need an excuse to go to him, he enters my heart when I turn my back), encapsulates the essence of longing. It speaks of the intense desire to reunite with a loved one, the feeling of being drawn to them, and the recognition that they hold a special place in one’s heart.

The second verse of the song, “והרדיו בסלון כבר תקוע על אותו פזמון כמעט חודשיים, כמה זמן זה בינתיים, אהבה בגוף ראשון, שרנו את השיר הלא נכון ולא ראית, ?מה עשית, מה עשית” (And the radio in the living room is already stuck on the same tune for almost two months, how long is it in the meantime, first love, we sang the wrong song and you didn’t see it, what did you do, what did you do), delves into the pain of past mistakes. It reflects on a love that maybe wasn’t meant to be and the longing for a connection that was never fully realized.
