Top 120 Songs With ‘Girl’ in The Title

1 About A Girl by Nirvana

Album: Bleach

This track was inspired by Kurt Cobain’s then-girlfriend, Tracy Miranda. However, she only found this out years later when she read a book on Nirvana.

Kurt was very reluctant to record this song initially. Nirvana had, by that time, built a strong following amongst underground fans who liked “Grunge.” Whatever that meant. The thing is, Kurt also loved bands like Queen and The Beatles.

Furthermore, it was an afternoon of listening to 1964’s “Meet The Beatles” that led to him making the first recordings of “About A Girl” by himself in his flat in Washington. These are now available on Nirvana Sliver The Best Of the Box.

Despite Kurt’s reluctance…

The producer of the group’s debut album, Jack Endino, the Sub-Pop label, and the band’s then drummer, Chad Channing, felt it was one of the best songs.

The song was re-released as a single to promote the 1994 MTV Live Unplugged in New York album. And it is regarded by many as the best song on that whole record. The live version is a stripped-down arrangement, played at a slower tempo, which allows for more emphasis on the lyrics.

The addition of an extra guitarist in the form of Pat Smear also makes for a more dynamic sound. “About a Girl” is regarded as one of Kurt’s first true masterpieces and has become one of the most iconic Nirvana songs ever.

2 Beautiful Girls by Sean Kingston

Album: Sean Kingston

This smash hit song about girls was the subject of some controversy due to the use of the term “suicidal” in the lyrics. Since then, it has etched itself into the hearts and minds of millennials the globe over.

When it comes to writing songs about girls, there are many reoccurring stories and characters. Kingston sings a sad tale of a modern Romeo unable to be with his Juliet. The track samples the 1961 Ben E. King hit “Stand By Me” and was produced by J.R Rotem and Peter Harrison.

“Beautiful Girls” may be simple to track, but so was the song it samples. And both of them achieved incredible success. Kingston’s voice was enough to get anyone’s attention. Even at the tender age of seventeen.

Rocking the radiowaves…

The track was played extensively on the radio before being released officially. It was even leaked early. Despite this, when it did drop as a digital release, it took a mere week to reach #1 on the Hot Digital Songs Chart.

“Beautiful Girls” would go on to make Sean Kingston the first person born in the 90s to have a #1 song on the US Billboard Hot 100. It stayed at the top of the UK Singles chart for four weeks. It has been certified platinum, double-platinum, and even triple-platinum in some countries.

3 The Most Beautiful Girl In The World by Prince

Album: The Gold Experience

After an ongoing battle with his record company about how, when, and what music Prince could release, which resulted in a change of name and the musical genius writing slave on his face, this track solidified Prince’s ability to remain successful after becoming the unpronounceable “Love Symbol.”

The track is a proper rock ballad, written to serenade any woman. Although, many believe that Prince wrote it with his then-finance, Mayte Garcia, in mind. It is a great showcase of Prince’s falsetto ability and features great production by the artist and Ricky Peterson.

To all the girls…

The accompanying music video was directed by Prince and American director and producer Antoine Fuqua. It revolves around several women reminiscing over the past. Prince obtained the footage needed to make the video by placing an ad in US, British, Dutch, and Spanish publications.

The ad featured Prince and the following text: “Eligible bachelor seeks the most beautiful girl in the world to spend the holidays with.”

There were instructions on where to send footage, and over 50,000 entries were received. Of which seven finalists were chosen and used in the music video. The song was an international #1 hit and remains one of Prince’s greatest songs.

4 Fat Bottomed Girls by Queen

Album: Jazz

If you are lucky enough to own the 7-inch single of “Fat Bottomed Girls,” you know that the “Get On Your Bikes and Ride” line at the end is a reference to the B-Side of the single, “Bicycle Race.”

In the lyrics for “Bicycle Race,” you will find a reference to the A-Side: “Fat bottomed girls, they’ll be riding today.” When it comes to songs with ‘girl’ in the title, this is one of the best.

Like many Queen songs…

The track is a machine that works as one. The thumping drum beat is made to sound as big as possible and melds seamlessly with Deacon’s bass track. Upon this foundation, songwriter and guitarist extraordinaire Brian May can let loose with his big roaring chords.

Topping it all off, we have the unmistakable banshee that is Freddie singing about the love of big bottomed ladies. What more could you want from a saucy rock song?

“Fat Bottomed Girls” was a Top 10 and Top 20 hit in various countries. And it would eventually earn platinum certification in both the US and the UK. It has become one of the most iconic rock songs of its era and is a favorite among Queen fans the world over.

5 Cinnamon Girl by Neil Young

Album: Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere

Neil Young is known for his vagueness and shoot-from-the-hip style, and this track is no exception. It was one of the first he made with his great band, Crazy Horse.

Neil once said that the song was written for a city girl on peeling pavement. Paul McCartney’s guitarist, Brian Ray, said the song was inspired by his sister, Jaen Ray. Young admitted that the song has images that pertain to the musician, but he also said that you need to leave space for the listener.

That guitar solo…

“Cinnamon Girl” is a beautiful track that features one of Young’s finest moments on the guitar. He tuned to double drop-D for this one which is something he’s no stranger to. Additionally, there’s a “one note guitar solo,” which has become the subject of much praise over the years.

And, if you listen closely, you’ll notice that all those notes are a little different, and that’s where the magic lies. Live performances are particularly enjoyable to watch since he never does it the same way twice.

6 Who Run The World (Girls) by Beyoncé

Album: 4

Beyoncé is no stranger to writing songs about the empowerment of women. She has had numerous tracks address the topic before this monster hit. Something was a bit different about this one, though. Lyrically, the approach was much more direct and aggressive than before.

The track was written by Beyoncé and The Dream. It’s a fully-committed and unapologetic assertion of female empowerment. One which called for the aggressive performance that Beyoncé put in on the studio recording.

The track was produced by Beyoncé, Switch, The Dream, and Shea Taylor. If you like tracks with influences from many different styles and places, this one is a cornucopia of sounds. “Who Run The World (Girls)” samples Major Lazer’s 2009 release “Pon De Floor.”

Running to the top…

“Who Run The World (Girls)” was an international hit. It peaked at #29 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and became a Top 10 hit in Australia, Belgium, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, and Scotland.

Furthermore, the accompanying music video was praised for its production as well. And it ended up winning Best Choreography at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards and Best Dance Performance at the 2011 Soul Train Music Awards.

7 I Kissed A Girl by Katy Perry

Album: One For The Boys

An argument could be made that this track helped define Pop Music during the 2010s. According to Katy, the idea for the song came to her just after she had woken up. The subject matter seemed so strange a thing to write a song about that she decided to give it a shot.

She was busy working on her second commercial release as a solo artist and had only two days of studio time left. Perry and her producer decided to lay it down simply due to its catchiness. This decision would end up paying off big time.

I liked it…

The track has been analyzed from many angles. Of course, that includes the exploration and discovery of one’s sexuality. And many view it as one of the first tracks to bring LGBT sensibilities into mainstream music.

“I Kissed A Girl” launched Katy into superstardom, making her one of the biggest stars in the world. The track reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed there for seven consecutive weeks. Likewise, it was also #1 in Australia, the UK, and most of Europe.

It has attained multi-platinum certifications in Australia, Canada, Denmark, the UK, and the US. As well as the tenth best-selling single of the 21st century. Of course, this is one of the best songs with ‘girl’ in the title. And it is just one of the best songs about ladies and love.

8 Just A Girl by No Doubt

Album: Tragic Kingdom

There are many reasons why this song is important. One of them is that it’s one of the first songs Gwen Stefani wrote without her brother, Eric. Instead, she collaborated with the track’s producer and guitarist, Tom Dumont.

Lyrically, the song had bold content for its time. Gwen had decided to stick with the tried and tested “Write what you know” advice, and it paid off. Her vocal talent is clear as day in this song about being a girl raised by strict parents.

That iconic rumbling guitar part that serves as the basis of the track has become as iconic as the singer herself. The track marked a change in the group’s sound. This has largely been attributed to the shift in writers. Gwen was singing about her life and experience, not her brother’s.

No Doubt’s breakthrough single…

And, since that time, it’s become a live staple for both No Doubt and Gwen Stefani shows. Gwen even named her Las Vegas Concert Residency “Just a Girl.” The track peaked at #23 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Likewise, it was a Top 10 hit in Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, Scotland, and the United Kingdom.

9 Girls & Boys by Blur

Album: Parklife

“Girls & Boys” has been interpreted in many different ways. Damon Albarn once remarked that the power of the song comes from the fact that there are four notes with a chorus that goes “Boys, Girls, Love.” If ever there was a universal message, that’s got to be it, right?

The track was inspired by the rampant sex scene that Damon had witnessed in the clubs of Magaluf in Spain. When viewed from this angle, the track can be seen as an objective observation. The lack of morality in the rampant copulation is not seen as good or bad, merely viewed.

The track is one of Blur’s best-performing singles. It reached #5 on the UK Singles chart, as well as also reaching #4 on the Billboard Modern Rock chart. It has since become a staple of live shows and a fan favorite.

10 Girls Just Wanna Have Fun by Cyndi Lauper

Album: She’s So Unusual

This track is seen as the breakthrough track for Cyndi. And, since its release, it’s taken on legendary status. It’s got to be one of the all-time feel-good songs for girls and women everywhere.

The message is simple, the music is catchy, and the feeling it generates is overwhelmingly positive. If you’re not aware of this one, you must have been raised under a rock or in outer space.

Consequently, the track reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became an international smash hit. It has since attained multi-platinum and platinum status in multiple countries.
