Samson Technologies started in 1980 making wireless microphone systems. Today they are an industry leader in both consumer and professional audio.
In 2005 Samson Technologies introduced the first professional USB microphones for use by musicians, broadcasters, and podcasters. They have since grown to a worldwide enterprise and industry standard in USB microphone technology in less than three decades.
So, let’s find out about one of their excellent USB mics in our in-depth Samson Technologies Q2U Review…
The Samson Q2U is an excellent handheld microphone choice for podcasting, live sound, and recording. It combines the best aspects of analog and digital in one package.
The Q2U is solid diecast construction, which makes it easy to bring to locations without the worry of it getting damaged. And is easily connected to a Mac/PC, mixer, P.A., etc., and features an on/off switch that controls both the XLR and USB. It is also possible to use it with phones and tablets with an adaptor.
It easily integrates into your current workflow with a 3.5mm headphone output, which has zero latency monitoring. This allows you to hear exactly what you are recording in real-time.
The Samson Q2U is a dynamic microphone with a cardioid pickup and comes in what is known as the podcasting pack. It really is an excellent microphone for its price. In fact, it almost sits in the same area of quality and sound as the pricier Shure SM58.
The included desktop tripod stand enables you to position the microphone at the optimum height for interviews or your podcast. Plus, with the inclusion of a foam windscreen, you will be able to reduce pops, distortion, and wind noise.
Let’s answer some commonly asked questions…
What is a Dynamic Microphone?
Dynamic microphones use electromagnatism to convert sound into an electrical signal. They are aailable in two categories, moving coil and ribbon microphones. They are hardwearing, which makes them perfect for live events and mic-ing drums etc.
What is a Cardioid Microphone?
A cardioid microphone has a unidirectional Cardioid polar pickup. Basically, it’s more sensitive to where the microphone points and about 6dB less sensitive on the sides… it’s good for vocals!!!
Why choose the Samson Q2U?
What makes a microphone with USB connectivity a superb and affordable choice is that you need no expensive external interface to get plugged in.
Plug and play…
You can simply plug it straight into your computer with no additional drivers or software needed. If you were to compare the Q2U’S sound quality to old traditional direct to computer microphones, there’s no comparison, its night and day how far the technology has advanced.
A versatile performer
This really is a flexible microphone that is as comfortable being used in podcasting as by the singer in a band. It is so affordable and durable, and can also, of course, be used with your more expensive audio interface. You will find it also great for location interviews, and it handles noise extremely well when being held.
Obviously, recording of any kind is best achieved in a sound treated environment like a studio. Saying that, you will get away with recording in less-than-ideal locations with this microphone. The Shure SM58 would be considered slightly better in most locations, but with the price point and the USB connectivity of the Q2U, you really can’t go wrong.
Never take it for granted when location recording that everything will work or that you will find the ideal situation to set up what you need. Therefore, having the flexibility of both USB and XLR certainly gives you a better chance of finding a setup that will work.
A backup can also be invaluable when everything is chaotic on location with very little time to maneuver. With both XLR and USB, you can record into your digital recorder and computer simultaneously, taking away all those needless headaches.

Samson Technologies Q2U Review – Final Thoughts
I have seen similar microphones like Shure 57’s and 58’s used in professional studios on vocals. They can sometimes work well on a rock track when the singer is blasting out a vocal. But I wouldn’t recommend the Q2U as a studio microphone because of its limitations, which may cause you problems later.
There are lots of far more suitable microphones on the market at competitive prices for your home studio setup. But as far as location shooting, podcasting, and narration or spoken word, this microphone is an excellent choice.
The Q2U is a very solid, quality sounding microphone for the price and perfect for those on a budget working on their first podcast. It comes with everything you need to get your podcast or interview moving fast, so I don’t think you will be disappointed; basically, how can you go wrong?
