Pete Burns: A Look at the Life of the Iconic Singer

Pete Burns was an iconic British singer who achieved worldwide fame with the band Dead or Alive. Known for his flamboyant style, gender-bending persona, and hit songs, Burns left a lasting impact on the music industry.

Early Life and Career

Born on August 5, 1959, Peter Jozzeppi Burns grew up in Bebington, a town in Merseyside, England. Burns was the eldest of five siblings and had a troubled childhood due to his father’s alcoholism and abuse. Burns’ love for music and fashion developed at a young age, and by the age of 14, he started his first band, The Mystery Girls.

In the 1970s, Burns moved to Liverpool, where he formed the band Dead or Alive with guitarist Wayne Hussey. The band’s first single, “I’m Falling,” was released in 1980 and gained some airplay on UK radio stations. But it wasn’t until 1984 that Dead or Alive achieved their breakthrough with the single “You Spin Me Round (Like a Record),” which topped the charts in the UK and the US.

Personal Life

Burns was known for his androgynous looks and his openness about his gender identity. He identified as bisexual and was married to Lynne Corlett from 1980 to 2006. In 2006, he entered into a civil partnership with Michael Simpson, who was his partner until his death.

Burns had no children but was a stepfather to Lynne’s two children from a previous marriage. His relationship with his family was strained due to his fame and lifestyle, but he remained close to his mother despite their differences.

After the success of “You Spin Me Round,” Dead or Alive continued to release hit songs throughout the 1980s, including “Lover Come Back to Me” and “Brand New Lover.” The band’s success dwindled in the 1990s, but Burns continued to pursue his career as a solo artist and reality TV star.

In 2006, Burns appeared on the UK version of Celebrity Big Brother, where he garnered controversy for his behavior and clashes with other housemates. He returned to the show in 2010 for Ultimate Big Brother but was forced to leave early due to health issues.

Burns also made headlines for his numerous plastic surgeries, which altered his appearance significantly. He openly discussed his addiction to cosmetic procedures and the toll it took on his physical and mental health.

Burns’ legacy lives on through his music and his impact on the LGBTQ+ community. He was a trailblazer for gender and sexual fluidity in pop culture and inspired countless artists who followed in his footsteps.

In a statement released after his death, Wayne Hussey, Burns’ former bandmate in Dead or Alive, said: “He was one of the true originals, a pioneer and a legend. […] The world is a duller place without him.”
