Best Yamaha AV Receivers – Top 8 Rated of 2023

Over the last 50 years, home entertainment has evolved beyond what we thought possible. Now we can go out and look for the Best Yamaha AV Receivers to bring the cinema to the home in vivid detail.

The development of the home cinema system was led by some interesting technologies. NASA started using digital imaging instead of analog to map the surface of the moon. It was also used in other ignoble pursuits in the 60s and later spy satellites.

TV and other recordings benefited from videotaping. It was only a matter of time before it arrived on our front door and found a home in consumerism.

Video to Home Cinema…

In a remarkably short time, we had video recorders at home. And then a series of new technologies developed at a breakneck pace. In the cinema, the sound was becoming more sophisticated. It didn’t take long before we could have the same technology at home in a box.

Needless to say, one of the leaders in that technology, as they are in a lot of things, is Yamaha. We all know them. But let’s take a minute to remind ourselves of exactly what they have done.

The Yamaha Corporation

Founded in 1887 in Hamamatsu, Japan, Yamaha has grown to become possibly the most important business in the world for music and sound.

At the forefront of guitars, modeling amplifiers and drums, and every instrument in the orchestra. Some to the highest professional level as per their concert pianos. They also manufacture a wide range of high-quality consumer products, including some of the best AV receivers known to man.

They have a reputation that covers the globe, and rightly so. We mentioned AV receivers as being one of the products with a big reputation.

So, let’s take a look at the Best Yamaha AV Receivers currently on the market and find the perfect one for your system…

1 Yamaha RX-V385 – Best Compact Yamaha AV Receiver

This is an AV Receiver that is designed to give you the best of the latest technologies at an affordable price.

The Build and Controls…

There are two things you can always rely on with Yamaha. The first is that the build will be solid and functional. The second that the controls will be very visual and easy to use.

Considering how much is packed into this receiver, it has quite a compact design. It is black and quite understated and measures just 12.4 by 17.13 by 6.34 inches. It weighs only 16 pounds, making it one of the best lightweight AV receivers on the market.

The controls are located on the front and most of the connections on the rear. The exceptions are a USB, and an aux 3.5mm socket, and the headphone socket. Placed on the front panel because they will be used often. It will save you struggling at the back.

Power-saving features…

There is an ample-sized screen giving you status information and large volume control. The other controls are a series of buttons, all suitably described as to their function. To enhance its eco-friendly status a bit, it has an ECO mode and an automatic power stand by. It has an expansive remote control that offers all of the features.

Vision Features…

It possesses 4K Ultra High Definition video. Also HDMI 2.1 with 2.2 HDCP and High Dynamic range. Likewise, Dolby Vision is included. It will allow you to transmit 4K videos. This at a pass-through rate of 60 frames per second.

Sound Features…

It has Yamaha’s Cinema DSP as standard. Cinema DSP is a Yamaha technology that will modify and enhance the sound field depending on the size and shape of the room you are in.

You will get seventy watts at eight ohms. The range of the frequencies is good, the depth of the low frequencies especially. Not dominating, but very impressive. It also has an automated EQ system that makes any necessary adjustments. This works in relation to the volume setting. The lower the volume, the higher EQ the sound receives on all frequencies.

Fantastic value for the money…

With Yamaha’s Virtual Cinema Front technology and Bluetooth functionality built-in with a music enhancer, this is a winner. The price point makes it even more attractive.

Yamaha RX-V385
Our rating:4.6 out of 5 stars (4.6 / 5)

  • Some great vision features built-in.
  • Impressive sound options with DSP at a great price point.

  • Not the easiest to control.
  • Some might want more than 70 watts output per channel.

2 Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A1080 7.2-Channel Network AV Receiver – Best Budget Yamaha AV Receiver

This receiver from Yamaha has a price point that is considerably lower than many of their other models. But having said that, it still enjoys many of the same features and benefits.

The Build…

As with all Yamaha equipment of this kind, it is well-built. And even though it is mostly plastic, it feels substantial. It measures a reasonably compact 17.28 by 17.13 by 7.17 inches and weighs 32 pounds.

Four circular feet, one at each corner, provide stability and also help to reduce any vibrations. A standard fitting on all Yamaha AV Receivers.

What’s inside?

Given its price point, there is plenty to get excited about. This 7.2 channel receiver has Dolby Atmos and Yamaha’s DSP, HD3, which enhances the field of sound. Adjusting it to the shape and overall size of the room.

This works with the built-in YPAO system. The latter automatically calibrates the sound from the speakers to achieve optimum performance. Furthermore, it has an infra-red remote control that offers all the adjustment and sound and vision options you need.

The Connections…

It has Bluetooth 4.2 and WiFi and will operate with Google Assistant and Alexa. Plenty of connection options for music are available. You can use Spotify and Apple Music, Sirius XM, and several other online services.

There are numerous connections on the reverse of the receiver. There are seven in and three out HDMI ports with HDCP and eARC. Using MusicCast, you can send the audio to other rooms you choose.

The Controls…

The front is quite minimalistic in its layout. Rotating controls for Input and Volume, a push-button for power, and a sizable screen.

Unlike the rear, which looks like it has been designed to accommodate the next Moon Shot. This is where all the connection feeds are located. And there are quite a few options.

To summarize…

A very good receiver at an attractive price point. It has plenty onboard to recommend it. Easily one of the best cheap Yamaha receivers available.

Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A1080 7.2-Channel Network AV Receiver
Our rating:4.5 out of 5 stars (4.5 / 5)

  • Plenty of sound and vision options for good performance.
  • The DSOP and YPAO systems offer automated sound adjustments.

  • There are updated versions of this receiver.

3 Yamaha RX-V377 5.1-Channel AV Home Theater Receiver – Best Yamaha Home Theater AV Receiver

This is a receiver designed for home theater enthusiasts and carries some very good features.

The Sound…

With this particular model, it is the sound and the sound options that win it some extra points. It is a five-channel system that delivers powerful surround sound. It will deliver 100 watts per channel with the option to have some extra bass. This extra bass doesn’t need super-sized speakers or dedicated woofers. It will project the lower frequencies adequately through smaller speakers.

A big asset to the sound performance is the inclusion of the Virtual Cinema Front system. This allows you to place up to five speakers in front of you and still get the surround sound experience. This makes it easily one of the best AV receivers for surround sound on the market.

Sophisticated sound…

Built-in to the receiver is the Yamaha YPAO sound optimization system. This balances the sound allowing for room size and shape to give you the best reproduction. It adjusts the EQ in line with volume levels. The less volume, the more EQ is applied. Rather similar to a ‘Loudness ‘control on a HiFi system.

The YPAO is slightly different from another inclusion, that being the Adaptive DRC. It will adjust the dynamic range of the sound. This again according to the volume level. The Yamaha RX-V377 enjoys the benefits of two DRC functions.

The Build…

Nothing special in the build. The usual Yamaha quality, made with tough plastic as most consumer products are. It weighs sixteen pounds and measures a fairly standard 17.1 x 12.4 x 6 inches.

Controls are located mostly on the front with connections on the rear. The exception to this is a 3.5mm audio input and a USB connection for a phone or other device. These are located on the front.

In our view, this is a very good idea, and we wonder why more manufacturers don’t do that. They are regularly used, so why stash them away at the back where they are awkward to use.

Other features…

It is fitted with an ECO option that will consume about twenty percent less power. It also has a color OSD to improve visibility. HDMI boasting 4k ultra HD for great image resolution.

Please note that this receiver does not have a built-in Bluetooth capability. That may be the reason that 3.5mm input is placed at the front. Still, an excellent receiver despite not having Bluetooth and a very attractive price point.

Yamaha RX-V377 5.1-Channel AV Home Theater Receiver
Our rating:4.4 out of 5 stars (4.4 / 5)

  • Some good features.
  • USB and 3.5mm input on the front panel.
  • Excellent sound control options.

  • No Bluetooth may dissuade some.

4 Yamaha RX-V485 5.1-Channel AV Receiver – Best Yamaha AV Receiver for MultiCast

The V485 is a slightly upgraded version of the V385 model. It has many of the same features and is similar in many ways. However, it does carry some nice extras.

The major differences…

It has increased output from 70 watts to 80 watts at 8 ohms and has WiFi, as well as Zone B control.

Plenty of features…

Built-in to this 5.1 channel system are Bluetooth, Spotify Connect, and Airplay. There are also several other connections, including Sirius Internet radio. It works with Amazon Alexa, and as we have mentioned, it has WiFi. This receiver uses the YPAO automatic sound parameter adjustments system.

The Connections…

Plenty on offer as usual. HDMI with HDCP and Dolby Vision, as well as 4k Ultra HD. The connection points are all situated on the rear. On the front panel are just the basic controls for operation, including a centrally placed screen. Also, the volume and an off and on button.

There are some useful additions to the front. The headphone socket is located there, as is a USB port and a 3.55mm. Helpful to have them placed here so they can be used easily

The Build…

Just about standard for most receivers. Like most products, it is well-built and feels quite substantial. It weighs 17 pounds and measures 12.4 by 17.13 by 6.34 inches. It has a very well-laid-out remote control that takes two AAA batteries which are supplied.

One of the big additions to this receiver is the MusicCast option. Music Cast is a wireless surround system that can operate throughout your house or in various rooms. It combines all of your devices. It is used in conjunction with MusicCast speakers.

An excellent system at a decent price point with plenty to offer, especially if you are looking for the best AV receiver with Alexa.

Yamaha RX-V485 5.1-Channel AV Receiver
Our rating:4.6 out of 5 stars (4.6 / 5)

  • 80 watts output per channel with Bluetooth, WiFi, and other built-in options.
  • Setup for MusicCast.

  • Not the easiest to set up due to a confusing instruction manual.

5 Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A780 7.2-ch – Best 7-Channel Yamaha AV Receiver

Another Receiver from the respected Aventage range and another receiver packed with great features. It is a 7.2 channel receiver that has Dolby Atmos as well as the DTS:X system. The DTS:X uses the MDA platform, which is royalty-free. Atmos uses the usual proprietary systems.

It has plenty of options in terms of connection possibilities. There are built-in Bluetooth and WiFi, as well as Airplay 2. Plus, it will operate with Google Assistant and Alexa. Linking up with your favorite music sites like Spotify, Apple Music, or Pandora is therefore easy. It also has a built-in connection to Sirius XM internet radio.

The Controls…

On the rear, the number of connection sockets can look quite daunting, but once you’ve got it organized, it is fine. HDMI with 2 out and 5 in with HDCP 2.3 plus eARC plus plenty more.

It runs 4K Ultra HD, HLG, HDR10, and BT.2020. Also on the rear is the inclusion of a phono input. This will allow you to play your vinyl collection through the system. Nice idea.

Get in the Zone…

Automatic sound calibration is built-in via the YPAO system, common to many Yamaha receivers. But there is a little more. It has a feature that is often called Intelligent Amp Design. That will let you listen to your stereo sound in a second room. They sometimes refer to it as Zone 2.

When you have Zone 2 turned on in a 7.1 system, the two back channels are redirected to Zone 2 and the speakers placed there. The receiver still provides power to the first room, which then is essentially a 5.1 system.

Listen all over the house…

With MusicCast included, you can expand your sound to other rooms wirelessly. Providing, of course, they have devices that are MusicCast compatible.

This is a very impressive system, typical of the quality of the Aventage range. The included remote is a little difficult to operate at times. It has indentations rather than buttons which isn’t the best design.

Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A780 7.2-ch
Our rating:4.6 out of 5 stars (4.6 / 5)

  • A 7.2 system with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X
  • Options for Zone 2 and MusicCast sound distribution.

  • Not the easiest of remote controls to operate.

6 Yamaha RX-V677 7.2-Channel WiFi Network AV Receiver – Best Yamaha AV Receiver for AirPlay

This is another Receiver that is full of technology to make your home cinema experience special. There is a slight difference with this model, though is that it does not have Bluetooth as a standard inclusion. You can, however, buy an adapter that plugs into one of the Receiver’s coaxial ports. However, the updated version of this receiver does have Bluetooth built-in.

Plenty to keep you interested…

The lack of Bluetooth might be a negative for some, but there are still plenty of features to offer. It is a 7.2 channel receiver with WiFi. It supports the latest HDMI and has AirPlay as well as HTC Connect.

The Sound…

It will give you up to 105 watts per channel. This makes it one of the most powerful AV receivers on our list. Furthermore, it has some great features that improve the sound. YPAO is one such addition. This is an automated system that calibrates the sound automatically to ensure you get optimum performance.

The Compressed Music Enhancer…

This is a system that will upgrade the sound from external sources. For instance, when music is digitally compressed, the frequency response is downgraded. The MP3 is a good example of this. This CME system restores the sound to its original format. Thus recreating it the way it was supposed to be heard.

Intelligent Amp Assign…

With this system, certain channels are sent to certain speakers. This allows you to create sound in other rooms or Zones.

Virtual Cinema Front…

This is for when having speakers at the back of your room for whatever reason is not possible. By placing the two surround speakers at the front, this system will go some way to create the surround experience.

A slightly older receiver than some, it measures 14.38 x 17.13 x 6.75 inches and weighs 22 pounds. It could be argued it has some features missing. But it more than makes up for it with the excellent sound control features.

Yamaha RX-V677 7.2-Channel WiFi Network AV Receiver
Our rating:4.1 out of 5 stars (4.1 / 5)

  • Plenty of excellent sound control features.
  • A 7.2 channels system supporting the latest HDMI.

  • No Bluetooth built-in.

7 Yamaha RX-V585 7.2-Channel – Best Value for the Money Yamaha AV Receiver

The Yamaha RX-V585 is a fairly recent addition to their Receiver range. Considering the options and features installed, it is definitely one of the Best Yamaha AV Receivers you can buy. And the price point makes it even more attractive.

The Build…

Fairly standard size as we suppose they all are, really. This one measures 17 by 6.5 by 12 inches and weighs 18 pounds. Controls are neatly located on the front. And once again, we see the HDMI socket moved to the back, and a USB port takes its place on the front panel.

There are some we know prefer it the other way. But we think it more likely a USB will be used more often these days. The rest of the front panel is what you might expect, with a clear screen centrally located. The main connection options are placed on the rear.

There is Bluetooth and WiFi built-in with connections to all the usual streaming sites. Also, there is SiriusXM internet radio. It has HDMI 2.1 along with HDCP 2.2 with one out and four in setup and 4K Ultra HD. Also, Dolby Vision and BT2020. It is compatible with Alexa, and you can even use that technology to achieve some basic functions like adjusting the volume.

Sound Options…

They have included Dolby Atmos and DTS:X for incredible sound performance. YPAO makes optimization of the sound automatic.

You will get 80 watts per channel, and it has Zone B and MusicCast options. If we have a downside, it is that the graphic user interface is rather basic and could be better laid out and more informative. A good option for the best overall AV receiver and at a very attractive price.

Yamaha RX-V585 7.2-Channel
Our rating:4.6 out of 5 stars (4.6 / 5)

  • Excellent sound performance with many features.
  • Bluetooth and WiFi links to all your favorite streaming sites.

  • The User interface for setup is a bit rudimentary.

8 YAMAHA 5.2-Channel AV Receiver – Best Bluetooth Yamaha AV Receiver

To finish our look at the Best Yamaha AV Receivers available, we have the RX-V4A, which is a 5-channel receiver.

There are always discussions about whether a five or seven-channel receiver is better. In reality, if you are setting up in a smaller room, then a five-channel system will be more than adequate. However, if you have a much larger room, then this is where a seven-channel system will pay dividends.

What’s inside?

It has WiFi and Bluetooth, and you have access to MusicPlay for iOS, Android, and Airplay 2. It also boasts voice control options using Google Assistant and Alexa. All the usual connections to streaming sites are available. All of which makes this one of the best wireless AV receivers you can buy.

HDMI, HDCP, and eArc with four lines in and one out are included. And it benefits from Zone Controls and automatic YPAO sound calibration. It is MusicCast surround sound capable if you have the necessary wireless speakers.

Dolby Atmos and DTS:X…

These are both included. Though you should be aware that while it has the software and the ability to interpret media using Atmos, it will not produce an accurate Atmos sound.

The sound always accurate and impressive with Yamaha equipment, but this system is not the loudest. It will give you 80 watts per channel. That is a bit lower than most other systems. It has a decent quality of build and measures 17 by 6.75 by 15 inches, and weighs a little under twenty pounds.

YAMAHA 5.2-Channel AV Receiver
Our rating:4.1 out of 5 stars (4.1 / 5)

  • Voice control options.
  • Has WiFi and Bluetooth.

  • Not the loudest you will come across.

This will depend to a certain extent on the size of the room. But also if you plan to use the sound options in two separate rooms. If that is the plan, then you will need a seven-channel receiver.

Therefore, we would recommend the…
