If you have managed to get your hands on one, you know they take your home gaming experience to a whole new level of competitive play. Although, if you want to take total immersion to the next level, you’re going to need a great set of headphones and a mic that lets you communicate effectively with your teammates.

Top 5 Best Wireless Xbox Series X/S Gaming Headsets in 2023

1 PDP Gaming: LVL50 Wireless Stereo Headset – Best Value for the Money Wireless Xbox Series X/S Gaming Headset

First up on my list is the LVL50 Wireless Stereo Headset from PDP Gaming. As one of the best budget wireless Xbox series X/S gaming headsets, this has a lot to live up to. Can it stand up to higher-priced headsets?

Well, to start with, this headset has been officially licensed by Xbox and is compatible with Xbox X, Xbox S, and Xbox 1, as well as PCs running Windows 10. That said, you could use it on PS4 and PS5 and Nintendo Switch as well, but don’t expect optimal performance.

This is a wireless radio frequency headset that doesn’t use Bluetooth. Instead, it connects to whatever its receiver dongle is plugged into. You get a range of about 40 feet (12m) as long as it’s line-of-sight. Around walls, this range will diminish. But I don’t know what you’re doing gaming behind walls anyway.

The battery life is impressive

You get 16 hours plus on a full charge. Of course, it depends on what volume you’re listening to, but this is a pretty solid average. The headset re-charges via USB-C and has a handy battery indicator light to let you know when it’s full up.

Sound-wise

You’re looking at 50mm drivers, which let you get into more bass than smaller speakers. The overall sound profile is good, although I think the bass could be clearer. But, you generally hear everything around you clearly and can pick up on faint, light noises well.

The boom mic has noise-canceling as well as mic monitoring on board. I found it was a bit of a trick to find the best position for the mic, which was quite a lot farther from my face than I had suspected. But once I found the sweet spot, I was heard clearly and strongly.

You also have two knobs on the headset, one for master volume and one for game/voice blending. This allows you to adjust the level of your chat while still allowing you to hear the game effects. This works well, but you may end up wanting to mark the levels with tape or something to keep you from having to tweak them every time.

How does it stack up?

Al in all, this is a decent headset with good battery life and good sound. The construction is a bit on the cheaper plastic side of things, but they look cool enough and feel comfortable with good breathability in the ear cups.

2 Turtle Beach: Stealth Wireless Gen 2 – Best Surround Sound Wireless Xbox Series X/S Gaming Headset

Next up, we have a decent, mid-range headset from Turtle Beach, the Stealth Wireless Gen 2 gaming headset. This is a similar headset to the LVL50 we just saw – it’s a plastic construction with steel sliders and a flip-up boom mic. 

Great if you wear glasses…

The ear cups here are lined with mesh fabric for good comfort and breathability. They’re a bit shallow, though, and this can bring your ears into contact with the driver covers.

However, they are described as “glasses friendly,” which puts less pressure on your frames and lets you wear them comfortably for longer. The inner lining of the frame is a nice soft foam that gives you even pressure and good comfort for long-term sessions.

How’s the sound?

This headset boasts 50mm drivers and amplified audio, providing you with big sound. Turtle Beach also gives you their patented “Superhuman Sound,” which they claim will allow you to stay alive 20% longer. I think these hold up to the claims. You’re able to hear everything clearly in 360 and pick up on the faintest of sound cues.

The mic here is nice and clear and monitored well. However, the flip-up to mute function here may end up causing this somewhat flimsy-looking mic boom to break early. I think they could have built it tougher.

Connections and battery

The headset gives you 15 hours of play from a full charge, which is pretty darned good. It also connects wirelessly to your Xbox directly; no dongle required. Meaning this is one of the easiest to use Xbox Series X/S gaming headsets you can buy.

While that’s super-convenient for Xbox, it limits your ability to use it with other devices. You can connect to PCs that support Xbox wireless, or you may have to buy a dongle separately to make this headset more versatile.

3 HyperX: CloudX Stinger Core Wireless Gaming Headset – Best Battery Life Wireless Xbox Series X/S Gaming Headset

HyperX is a brand from Kingston that has just started out making accessories. Already, they’ve built a loyal following thanks to their quality products that reflect gamers’ needs. The CloudX Stinger Core wireless gaming headset is one more accessory that is going to make a lot of people happy.

This headset is designed to connect wirelessly to the Xbox and Xbox wireless PCs without a dongle. Like the Turtle Beach headphones, this can be a blessing because the connection is so quick and easy.

But, it can also be a limitation if you want to use this headset with anything else. However, it is licensed by Xbox, so you know it’s up to the task of interacting seamlessly with this console.

In the sound department

Inside, you’ve got 40mm drivers that can work with Windows Sonic or Dolby Atmos sound mixes supported by Xbox. As a result, this is one of the best Xbox Series X/S gaming headsets for Dolby Atmos.

However, the bass isn’t the best and can muddy things up a bit at high volume. The top-end also can get piercing at high volume, although I think things sound quite balanced at a moderate level.

The flip-up boom mic is like the other models we’ve seen. Here, its sound is very clear, and positioning is less of an issue to get a good sound. Flipping it up mutes your mic easily, like with the LVL50 and Turtle Beach Stealth.

Construction-wise

I like this headset the best of the three we’ve seen so far. Once again, we’re looking at plastic framing with steel sliders for sizing. The ear cups here are memory foam covered in leatherette. These cups are comfortable and keep sound in the best.

However, they can also get the hottest, so you’ve got a bit of a tradeoff there. But overall, this headset is comfy and can give you up to 17 hours of play on a charge, the longest yet. Making it a contender for one of the best wireless Xbox Series X/S gaming headsets.

4 Astro Gaming: A20 Wireless Gen 2 Headset – Most Comfortable Wireless Xbox Series X/S Gaming Headset

Astro Gaming is taking us in a slightly different direction with the A20 Wireless Gen 2 Headset. Although the idea behind this headset is the same as the others we have seen so far, the construction does something quite different here.

Secure fit

Rather than curved sliders, Astro has gone with sturdy vertical height sliders on the A20, and I think this is a smart move. This, combined with the gap in the inner frame foam lining at the top of your head, allows you to get a very good fit that doesn’t give you that top of head fatigue.

The only issue there, though, is that if you have a particularly big or wide head, there is less flexibility for sizing. That said, this is one of the most durable Xbox Series X/S gaming headsets you can buy.

The ear cups here are a nice size, spacious enough for larger ears. They’re cloth-covered and somewhat breathable for those long sessions.

Sound-wise

I noticed right away that the 40mm drivers don’t give you a whole lot of bass power. But you do get an overall clear sound and three preset EQ settings to choose between different games. I would have liked to see more ability to customize the sound at this price point, though.

As for the mic, this headset picked up the most background noise of the lot. It does have on-board mic monitoring and level blending for getting your chat and game levels right. However, that background noise made things less clear in conversations. 

Nice and comfy…

Overall, I found this headset the most comfortable so far, but the sound definitely isn’t the greatest. I’m not sure that’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make.

5 Steel Series: Arctis 9X Wireless Gaming Headset – Best Premium Wireless Xbox Series X/S Gaming Headset

For quite a pretty penny, Steel Series lets you pick up their high-end Arctis 9X Wireless Gaming Headset. This headset is different in both construction and connectivity from what we’ve been looking at, so let’s dig a little deeper here. 

Quality build…

First off, the construction is noticeably different. These are steel-constructed frames that are lined with plastic and foam. But the part on the frame that contacts your head is only a stretchy band, much like a ski goggle band. This means you have a lot less pressure on the top and sides of your head. It also helps people who wear glasses while gaming.

The ear cups are big and spacious. They’re lined with a breathable mesh that’s ultra-comfortable. Overall, these features combine to make this headset tremendously comfortable to wear.

The sound is also great

The headset uses Windows Sonic plus Steel Series’ own Arctis sound modeling to create a very clear soundscape. Making this one of the best sounding Xbox series X/S gaming headsets out there.

The mic here is on a retractable boom, which is kind of cool but also, I think, a mistake. It looks like this is a point of failure waiting to happen. The mic is quite clear and does a great job blocking out background noise.

The connection is where we have to be a bit concerned…

Like some of the other dongle-less headsets we’ve already seen, the Arctis 9X connects directly to your Xbox’s wireless connection without a dongle. But they also have Bluetooth onboard. So, you can connect to your phone and chat with a teammate and play at the same time. You can blend the levels easily enough, making this a really attractive function.

However, the connection drops out frequently, even when fully charged. I don’t know why, but if it can’t stay connected, it’s not going to be among the best wireless Xbox series X/S gaming headsets. Despite the great sound, excellent comfort, and 20-hour battery life, that connection issue spoils it. I hope they find a firmware fix for this otherwise great product.

Steel Series: Arctis 9X Wireless Gaming Headset

This is the cheapest Xbox licensed headset out there, and it gives you decent functionality for your money. It has a good sound, good battery life, and keeps a solid connection with the Xbox X/S. If you want to spend more, go for it, but I think this budget headset is a pretty darned good deal.
