Top 8 Best Subwoofer for Music Only in 2023

If you love your music, then the experience needs to be as good as you can get. And that means being able to “feel” it as well as hear it.

If you have a home cinema system, you would expect there to be heavy doses of the bottom-end. But music systems seem to ignore this aspect of the overall sound experience somewhat.

An Important Component

The low frequencies are one of the most important parts of the sound spectrum. They need to be there. Not overpowering, but very prominent. What you will need is a subwoofer to generate those lower-end sounds that add realism to the sound.

What we are going to try and find is the best subwoofer for music only. And one important point that is going to come across is that it isn’t necessarily going to cost a fortune.

The Frequency Range

Before we start, it is useful to understand the range of frequencies at the low-end. But it is not just about the lower end. Subwoofers in music help in providing clarity for every note played or sung.

Even if you have expensive speakers in your system, they may not be able to reproduce frequency levels below 50Hz. It is generally agreed that the average human ear can hear frequencies from as low as 20Hz up to 20,000Hz.

Many manufacturers claim 20Hz. Few provide it with any kind of quality. Even some subwoofers can’t do it. But if you choose wisely, then you will get your 20Hz and allow the music its full depth and warmth.

So, let’s take a look at the very best subwoofers for music only and find the perfect option for you.

1 Sonos Sub (Gen 3) – Best Premium Subwoofer for Music Only

Let’s begin with a subwoofer from Sonos. They have built a reputation for producing quality speakers, but they are also known for not being cheap. In fact, it is only the serious music enthusiast that tends to buy them.

The Build

It is certainly a stylish subwoofer with what can be described as a minimalist look. Despite this, it is not a small speaker. It measures 15.3 by 15.8 by 6.2 inches and weighs 34 pounds. It is not ideally suitable for a small room.

A nice design aspect is the rounded corners. Subwoofers can sometimes look just like boxes, but this speaker has none of that. And no square corners mean no sharp edges. There are four small rubber feet on the bottom.

Very few connections to worry about. Just an Ethernet input and the power supply. There is also a button to connect the subwoofer to your Sonos network if you have one. It is available in black and white.

There are two drivers facing inwards, each with its own amplifier. They are designed to eliminate any rattle or excessive vibrations. According to Sonos, the frequency range will go as low as 25Hz.

This is made simple using the Sonos App. This lets you pair up the subwoofer with certain other Sonos devices. However, it will only pair up with Sonos speakers of this generation. So if you have 2nd gen model, this speaker will not be compatible. As I said at the beginning, if you are looking for a cost-effective option, this probably isn’t it.

Sonos Sub (Gen 3)
Our rating:4.8 out of 5 stars (4.8 / 5)

  • Nice design with rounded corners.
  • Each driver has an amplifier.

  • Expensive and is only compatible with the same generation Sonos speakers.

2 Polk Audio PSW10 10″ Powered Subwoofer – Best Basic Subwoofer for Music Only

This is another American manufacturer well-known in audio circles. Polk offers more cost-effective products, and this is a good example.

The Build

Plain and simple is the order of the day with the design. Once again, a minimalistic approach to its design means it will not stand out in your room. If you like a clean and tidy look, this does the job. It measures 14.5 by 14 by 15 inches and weighs 26 pounds.

As is common with most speaker cabinets these days, it is made from sturdy MDF fiberboard. It has a black and silver finish with a removable mesh front panel.

It has a ten-inch powered front-firing driver through a vented bass reflex port. It has a 100-watt amp that at peak will deliver 50 watts RMS. The frequency response, though, isn’t the widest at 40 – 160Hz.

On The Rear

On the back, out of the way and away from sight, are the controls and connections. There are volume and low pass filter controls with input and output ports. There is also an interesting three-setting power control switch.

You can choose between On, Off, and Automatic. When in Auto mode, if there are 15 minutes with no activity, it will turn itself off.

For what is a very attractive price point, this is a decent speaker. Not the loudest you will find, and there will be others with a better frequency range. But it is still good value for money. The sound quality is reasonable without being exceptional and will best suit the smaller to medium size room.

It comes with a five-year warranty for the driver and three years for the amp, which is a good offer. As a result, it’s one of the most durable subwoofers for music only currently on the market.

If there is a downside, it is that it has not been designed with magnetic shielding. That is not an issue with your standard TV but could provide some interference near a computer or CRT-based TV.

Polk Audio PSW10 10 Powered Subwoofer
Our rating:4.7 out of 5 stars (4.7 / 5)

  • Nice minimalist design with attractive styling.
  • Decent at a cost-effective price with good warranty arrangements.

  • No magnetic shielding, which could be a problem near a computer.

3 Q Acoustics Q B12 Subwoofer – Best Value for the Money Subwoofer for Music Only

When you consider some audio companies, they have been around quite a while. Q Acoustics might be considered the new kids on the block. But don’t think for a moment they lack quality.

They were founded in the UK in 2006 by a group of audio engineers. And in a short time have established a big reputation for themselves. The B12 subwoofer is a good example of what they can produce.

The Build

To get the full benefit of this subwoofer, you may need quite a large room. It takes no prisoners. This is one of the largest subwoofers for music only measuring 15.7 by 15.7 by 17.5 and weighing over 47 pounds. It has a sealed enclosure design with four metal stability feet that are pointed to rest on carpeted floors.

Internal bracing patterns are designed to create stiffness and help to create a terrific bass response. As a result, it is a great heavy duty subwoofer for music only.

You won’t find anything outrageous in the design. It is sleek and stylish and, in some ways, understated. A refined look that will allow it to fit in nicely with other furniture. The edges are rounded, which adds to the aesthetics. It is available in black or white.

On The Back

The rear of the subwoofer has an interesting design. The crossover and volume controls are visible along with the status light. But all the rest of the control buttons and ports are underneath a magnetic cover out of sight. There are switches for on, off, and automatic status, line-level inputs, phase adjustment, and the power connector.

The Sound

The design might be very pleasing to the eye, but it is the sound that makes this subwoofer stand out. It has a 12-inch long-throw woofer and a Class D amplifier that will generate a powerful 220 watts RMS. That will be over 400 watts peak output. It features a 50mm voice coil to ensure thermal compression is minimal.

The frequency range extends from 28 to 300Hz, meaning the sound is powerful, deep, and very detailed. The sealed unit helps to achieve that and gives you plenty of floor vibration when you need and expect it.

Set at a very attractive price point for what it is, one of the most powerful subwoofers, this must be a candidate for the best subwoofer for music only.

Q Acoustics Q B12 Subwoofer
Our rating:4.3 out of 5 stars (4.3 / 5)

  • Exceptional design and internal bracing.
  • Great Sound with plenty of power at a very attractive price.

  • None

4 Polk Audio PSW505 12″ Powered Subwoofer – Best Budget Subwoofer for Music Only

Back to Polk again for another subwoofer that is a cost-effective option. Like many of the Polk speakers, it is a fairly standard product that performs quite well at a decent price.

The Build

It is a simple, some would say uninspired design, in a square box. Certainly not a small subwoofer measuring 16 by 15 by 18.2 inches and weighing 48 pounds. And it’s fitted with plastic feet, so will be better placed on a carpet rather than a hard, smooth surface.

It has a black laminated MDF fiberboard construction with a ported vent on the rear. This is a design that attempts to reduce cabinet turbulence and potential distortion. The corners are not rounded off, so care needs to be taken to avoid a nasty bump. The baffle at the front is one inch thick MDF board.

Controls and Connections

On the front, it is quite plain with a removable cloth mesh cover that reveals the speaker inside. On the rear are the controls and connections. These include volume and low-pass filter, a phasing switch, line inputs, and LFE input. There are also high-level outputs and inputs and a power connector.

It has a 12-inch long-throw driver fitted with high-roll foam surrounds. It will give you about 220 watts RMS of power. The frequency range is 25Hz to 125Hz.

A Budget Option

This is a decent subwoofer. Certainly not the most visually attractive you will find. But if you are looking for one of the most affordable subwoofers for music only, then this might suffice.

There are some little problems. The plastic feet could be a problem on a hard surface, and the oversized vent on the back makes a little bit of noise at higher volumes.

Polk Audio PSW505 12 Powered Subwoofer
Our rating:4.1 out of 5 stars (4.1 / 5)

  • Good solid construction with a removable front screen.
  • 12-inch long-throw woofer with foam surrounds.

  • The rear vent can be noisy, and plastic feet are a potential problem.

5 Yamaha 10″ 100W Powered Subwoofer – Best Mid-Range Subwoofer for Music Only

When you are looking for quality mid-priced audio equipment, it doesn’t usually take long for the Yamaha name to be mentioned. If you are looking for a subwoofer that gives you great performance at a very attractive price point, this could be it.

The Build

It is made from MDF fiberboard and has a stylishly designed front cover. The cabinet design has squared-off corners not rounded, which some may see as disappointing. It measures 11.5 by 11.5 by 13.25 inches and weighs only 26 pounds. Therefore, it is one of the best music only subwoofers for small rooms that you can buy.

Good Design Features

Yamaha usually offers some good features with their audio, and this subwoofer is no exception. It uses the new Twisted Flare Port technology to help to create the tight bass sound.

This new technology creates a smooth pathway for airflow against the turbulence that can occur with a traditional port. It also utilizes Yamaha’s Active Servo Technology.

It has a ten-inch cone driver with discrete amp circuitry and offers 50 watts RMS of power. Not as much as some but more than enough for a smaller room as we have mentioned. The frequency range is 25Hz – 180Hz.

This is a subwoofer that punches well above its weight when considering its price point. The low-frequencies are crisp and clear, courtesy of the ANIC circuits.

For those looking for a good system for a smaller room, this does the job perfectly. And it will pair up with the majority of other devices. It would be hard to find better value for money.

Yamaha 10 100W Powered Subwoofer
Our rating:4.7 out of 5 stars (4.7 / 5)

  • Nice design with some good features.
  • Incorporates new Yamaha technologies to create a powerful low-end.

  • No adjustable crossover or standby features.

6 Acoustic Audio PSW-10 – Best Low Cost Subwoofer for Music Only

Next up, in my review of the Best Subwoofer for Music Only, let’s now take a look at a Goldwood Sound subwoofer that is about as cheap as they will come. It comes in a variety of size options. You can get 6, 8, 10, 12, and 15-inch woofer sizes. We are going to take a look at the 10-inch model.

The Build

It is made from MDF fiberboard and is fitted with solid internal bracing. It has a simple and efficient design measuring 12.4 by 11.4 by 12.4 inches and weighs just under 23 pounds. A nice touch is that it has been given an attractive ash wood finish.

This is a down-firing design and therefore has four small legs. The advantage of a down-firing woofer is that the sound goes into the floor. Some people prefer that as it can create an intense low-end feeling.

On The Rear

All the ports and controls are located on the back of the speaker. There is gain and 40 – 140Hz crossover controls, line-in, and also Hi-level input and outputs. Also, an Off, On, and an Auto setting. The auto mode is signal sensing and will turn the speaker off during inactivity. There is a phase control that operates between 0 and 180 degrees.

The Sound

For such a modest speaker size, it can handle a decent power level. It has a ten-inch long throw with a treated cone woofer. You can expect 125 watts RMS or about 250 watts peak from the built-in power amplifier. There is a decent frequency range of 25Hz to 250Hz.

It performs reasonably considering its price point and probably gives you a little more than you might expect. It can’t compete with the more expensive subwoofers, of course. But at this price point, it does a decent job for those working to a tight budget.

It is not LFE compatible, but as this is all about subwoofers for music only, that isn’t a problem. It comes with a six-foot RCA cable and Y adapter.

Acoustic Audio PSW-10
Our rating:4.2 out of 5 stars (4.2 / 5)

  • Attractive design down-firing speaker.
  • Decent power level and frequency range at a very competitive price point.

  • Lacking some features.

7 Klipsch R-12SW Subwoofer – Best Sound Quality Subwoofer for Music Only

Klipsch is a speaker company that I have a lot of time for. They make good speakers that look great and have, for the price point, a very good sound. This subwoofer is a good example.

The Build

Everything about the design and look says Klipsch. The design is simple, and it has a minimalist feel to it. The black matte polymer finish means it is going to be strong and stable. And it will be able to fit with the decor in most rooms.

This is a front-firing woofer with that familiar large copper-spun speaker that Klipsch is famous for. It is hidden behind a removable mesh covering should you prefer to have a plain frontage. It is quite a large speaker measuring 16 by 14 by 18.5 inches and weighing 33 pounds.

On The Back

Located on the back are the connections and controls. These feature the gain and low-pass controls, a phase switch, On/Off and auto switch, and line-in ports. There is also the non-detachable power cord.

The Sound

The R-12SW has a twelve-inch front-firing driver, as I have said, with an all-digital amplifier. It will give you about 200 watts RMS, 400 watts at peak. If you have other Klipsch speakers, the phase and low-pass crossover controls will allow you to integrate the sound perfectly.

There can be no doubt that the sound is impressive. The bass is deep and warm and very detailed and delivers a clean and undistorted sound even at higher volumes. The frequency response is good at 29Hz to 120Hz, and there is very little that you can find to complain about.

Klipsch R-12SW Subwoofer
Our rating:4.8 out of 5 stars (4.8 / 5)

  • As always with Klipsch, a well-made, good looking speaker.
  • Very good sound with plenty of features.

  • None.

8 Yamaha 8″ 100W Powered Subwoofer – Best Compact Subwoofer for Music Only

Our final subwoofer is another offering from Yamaha. If you happen to be looking for a subwoofer that is going to give you a great sound, this will impress you. What is also attractive is that it won’t break the bank.

The Build

It is quite a small speaker measuring only 11.5 by 11.5 by 13.25 inches and weighing just 18.7 pounds. Making this one of the best lightweight subwoofers for music only you can buy. Ideal then for the smaller room, its design is easy and not overdone, and it can be placed anywhere. It is the same design as its ten-inch cousin.

New Features

Yamaha has developed what they call a twisted flare port and included it in this speaker. A standard port can sometimes experience turbulence because of the extreme airflow.

The twisted port technology helps to create a smoother pathway for the air. As with other speakers in this range, it also benefits from Yamaha Active Servo Technology.

The Sound

The 8-inch cone woofer manages to create a good sound for use in a smaller room. It won’t provide such a high level of performance in a larger room.

You will get 50 watts RMS or 100 watts peak from this subwoofer. The twisted port gives you a clean and tight bass sound. As part of a home music system, it does an excellent job. At the price point, this is a quality product and great value for money.

Yamaha 8 100W Powered Subwoofer
Our rating:4.7 out of 5 stars (4.7 / 5)

  • A well-designed subwoofer that won’t take up too much room.
  • The new technology creates a great bass response.

  • Not suitable for larger rooms.

Best Subwoofer for Music Only – Buying Guide

Buying Guide

Well, the reason for getting a subwoofer is to increase the bass presence in the overall sound. This, in turn, will improve the overall performance of your sound system.

But there are some things to bear in mind. Just buying a big, all-powerful subwoofer isn’t necessarily the answer. It has to fit into what you already have. The key points are:

  • Add a well-rounded bass sound.
  • Increase the lower frequencies without any distortion.
  • Make sure the subwoofer doesn’t overpower the rest of the speakers in your system.

And as added consideration, you will need to consider the style and design of the cabinet.
