Top 6 Best Autotune Microphone Systems of 2023

It’s a good idea before I take a look at the best autotune microphone systems currently available to understand exactly what Auto-tune actually is.

How Does It Work?

It was originally developed by Antares AudioTechnologies in 1997. The idea was to improve the qualities of a vocal in terms of its pitch. In other words, ensuring that all the notes sung were perfectly in tune.

To do that, the phonetics are separated from the frequency. The frequency is then adjusted, and if need be, it is given the corrected pitch.

This system has one major technical advantage over previous attempts at auto-tune, in that it is possible to make changes to the frequency without altering the speed of the music.

What Is Auto-Tune For?

Put simply; its purpose is to create perfect notes by adjusting imperfect notes to the correct pitch. Basically, out-of-tune notes become in-tune notes.

Not Everyone is Happy

There are a number of producers, artists, and music lovers that don’t like Autotune. They say that it takes away the ‘human’ element from the vocal and makes it sound plastic and created.

And, I agree that there is an element of truth in that. But it does have its place in a certain environment, and the recording studio is certainly one.

A Big Advantage for the Professional Singer

While you could argue that auto-tune is a bit of a cheat for a singer that just cannot sing in tune, there is another side. A professional singer might make a few takes of a song, and there could be just one or two notes with very slight pitch problems. Do you keep doing retakes until it is perfect?

You could, or you could just use the Auto-Tune system to make the adjustment. That is going to save the singer’s voice but also save time. And as we all know, in a recording studio, time is money.

On Stage?

These days Auto-Tune systems have been developed to accommodate live performances as well as studio sessions. This allows the adjustment to be made in real-time, unlike in the studio, where the changes are normally made during the mix allowing more creative freedom.

There are plenty of possibilities with these systems so let’s take a look at some of the very best, starting with the…

1 Tascam TA-1VP Rackmount Vocal Producer Processor – Best Rack Mounted Autotune Microphone System

Tascam, of course, has a big reputation for quality sound engineering. And they have produced this vocal producer processor in collaboration with the original creator of auto-tune, Antares

The Build

It is designed to be rack mounted and measures 21.75 by 11.75 by 5.75 inches. It has been given an XLR microphone input on the front panel that includes phantom power for use with condenser mics.

On the rear of the unit are balanced TRS output and inputs, and if you want to simulate doubled vocals, a Double Track out.

Built-In Features

Tascam has included most of the features you are going to need. There is a preamp for the microphone, compression, tube and mic modeling, and of course, the Auto-Tune facility. The Tascam TA-1VP also includes a de-essing feature.

This is important for creating a perfect vocal sound. It operates by reducing the level of the signal’s high-frequency content when it has excess sibilant, the ‘ess’ sound. This can be present in the ‘s’ sound, but also in ‘z’ or ‘ssh’ if the level exceeds a set threshold.

Microphone Modeling by Antares is included, which will simulate some of the best high-end microphones used in studios with variable proximity effects.

Where Is It Best Used?

It is going to fit perfectly into the recording studio environment, and being rack mounted was obviously designed with that in mind. However, it is also going to work in live performances. That can be either in large venues or, indeed, smaller clubs.

The Controls

These are located on the front of the unit. They consist of a series of easy-to-use meters and buttons that are laid out in blocks. It is, therefore, easy to see any adjustments being made to the signal.

There are controls for the level of pitch correction required in different selectable scales. Probably not the cheapest Auto-Tune microphone system you will find, but very good value for money when you consider the features. Therefore, it should certainly be considered as one of the best Auto-Tune microphone systems around at the moment.

  • Rack mounted, which keeps the unit secure, but also can be used as a stand-alone unit.
  • 35 presets that are rewritable are included in the software.

  • None.

2 Peavey PV 14 AT 14 Channel Compact Mixer with Bluetooth and Antares Auto-Tune – Best Autotune Mixing Desk

Peavey is another well-known manufacturing business in the music world. However, unlike Tascam, they are more involved with the amplifier and speaker market for musicians and singers. Therefore, they created this compact two-channel mixer with Antares Auto-Tune built-in.

The Build

This is a sturdy mixer that can be used either as a stand-alone unit or rack-mounted. It has a strong but slimline design and measures 18.7 by 20.47 by 3.54 inches, and weighs 13 pounds.

It is, therefore, ideal for use in a fixed environment or on the move. There is a cradle built-in to accommodate devices up to tablet size.

The Features

One of the great assets of this mixer is that Antares Auto-Tune is built-in. That means you can make the necessary alterations without any extra hardware. You can use the desk to create and mix your final product.

Bluetooth is also included, which allows you to connect to any compatible device. It will also hook up to DAW interfaces as there is a direct out on every channel.

Eight Channels

It has eight channels of mic preamps, with a combo XLR and ¼-inch sockets. Four of these have the Auto-Tune facility, and there are eight direct outputs. Each input has a selectable Hi-Pass Filter.

Some Useful Extras

Extra features are included that are also useful. There are pre-installed Digital effects, and on all channels, the Peavey MidMorph 3-band EQ with bypass.

Four channels have built-in compression, and each channel has a channel mute. To help you control what is going on and see the desk’s current status, there is an LCD.

A good value piece of equipment with some great features. In my view, it is one of the best AutoTune microphone systems.

Peavey PV 14 AT 14 Channel Compact Mixer with Bluetooth and Antares Auto-Tune
Our rating:4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

  • Bluetooth connection allows the connection of devices.
  • Easy to use mixing desk with some excellent features.
  • Auto-Tune on four of the eight channels.

3 Peavey PV 10 AT w/Auto-Tune and Bluetooth – Best Compact Autotune Mixing Desk

For those that like the features and the mixer design of the Peavey PV 14 AT, the PV 10 AT is just a slightly scaled-down version.

It is slightly smaller measuring 17 by 17 by 4 inches, and slightly lighter weighing 10.4 pounds. It carries many of the features that its bigger cousin enjoys. However, there are some differences as you might expect.

The Features

There are four channels of good quality microphone preamps. Two of which have Antares Auto-Tune, and two channels carry compression. To allow use with condenser mics, it has 48v Phantom power if required.

For recording, there are four direct outputs. Just like the PV 14 AT, it has built-in digital effects, and to let you see what status the mixer is at, there is an LCD screen.

In Or Out

It can be used either in a fixed studio role or taken to different venues. Its slightly smaller size and lighter weight make it easily portable. And the same sturdy, slimline build means it is well-protected from a few bumps.

The good news is that it is slightly cheaper, for those on a budget that will be of interest. So, if you only need four channels, and only two with auto-tune, it’s a great option.

  • Competitive Price Point.

  • Some may need the extra channels and features.

4 Roland VT-4 Vocal Transformer – Best Affordable Autotune Microphone System

Roland, of course, is renowned for the effects and musical equipment they manufacture, which is of the highest quality. And if you are looking for a voice system that is compact, portable, and easy to use, then this is worth considering.

The Build

Compact and easy to carry around, this system certainly is. It measures just 5.24 by 6.85 by 2.28 inches and weighs only 2 pounds. It has a sturdy, good quality all-plastic build.

All the controls are located on the top of the unit and are easily visible, which makes it easy to use. On the rear of the unit are inputs for MIDI and a microphone, a left and right line out, and a USB connection.

It has some useful features built-in, including delay, reverb, voicing, and formant, which is also a voice transformer facility that will give you a range of current and vintage voice effects. You can use layering of the effects in real-time, as is the pitch control. And the effects can be adjusted with one touch.

The Roland VT-4 offers pitch control and adjustment. But more than that, it also offers a series of effects to enhance the sound of your vocals. You will also get a choice of how you power up the Roland VT-4. You can run it via the USB port or with four AA batteries. Battery power lasts about five hours of constant use.

It is a cost-effective option for a basic pitch adjuster and voice transformer. However, it is not as functional as the more expensive machines. For simple use at a basic level at this price point, it is worth considering.

5 Zoom V3 Vocal Processor – Best Compact Autotune Microphone System with Harmonizer

Next, in my review of the best microphone systems with autotune, let’s continue with the theme of having a portable vocal processor and test this machine from Zoom.

The Build

This is another compact machine measuring 6.5 by 8.66 by 2.25 inches and weighs just 2 pounds. It has been designed to make it easy to use with 16 touchpads on the top control panel.

The Features

There are some useful features built-in to give you plenty of options for voice processing. There is the pitch correction, of course, as well as a harmonizer. This is a very interesting feature allowing you to create three-part harmonies over a full octave by combining your choice of voices together.

It has reverb, delay, and compression, all offering individual settings, and has 16 voice effects that you can choose from. Also, for extra clarity, there is a built-in enhancer that gives a high-quality reproduction of all audio.

For your condenser mics, there is 48v Phantom Power, and there is a 2.0 USB interface that will provide you with a recording standard of either 16/24/32-bit, 44.1 kHz. It runs off four AA batteries, though they only give you about 3.5 hours of use.

6 FLAMMA FV01 Vocal Effects Processor Pitch Correction Pedal – Best Budget Autotune Microphone System

Flamma might not be the first name you think of when thinking about voice processing. They should, however, be a name you consider if you are looking for value for money.

They have created a number of affordable and easy-to-use products that are compact and sturdy. As the name suggests, this is a pitch corrector, but unlike the other products we have looked at, this is a pedal.

Plenty Of Features On Offer

This pedal’s primary job is pitch correction for vocals, and it offers a clean and precise result. But it also offers a few useful extras. There are three varieties of vocal effects, Warm, Normal, and Bright. These can be operated immediately by using the push button switch. Each will give you a different EQ setting to suit your voice.

It has three separate reverbs, Low decay, Classic Plate reverb, and Large Hall. Also, there are three delay settings. These include a Digital modern delay, a Tape delay giving a warmer, vintage-like sound, and a classic slap delay.

Perfectly in time…

There is a tap tempo control to set the timing for the delay feature. The unit is a traditional ‘stompbox’ type pedal and will sit neatly on a pedalboard. And using the Line In function, it can be used as an amplifier for the microphone. For condenser mics, there is optional 48v Phantom Power.

At just 6.1 by 5.24 by 3.35 inches and weighing only 1.2 pounds, it is very compact and easy to carry around.

This is very much a budget option for pitch correction, but it has some nice features. It is portable and even fits on a pedalboard if you choose.

Our rating:4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

  • Compact and easy to carry around.
  • Efficient and easy-to-use pitch correction at a cost-effective price.
  • Some nice built-in effects.

  • Some will need a more sophisticated system of pitch correction.

Best Autotune Microphone Systems – What to Consider when Buying?

What to Consider when Buying

There are a few things to consider when buying your system. No one sings perfectly in tune all the time, so at some point, every singer could use pitch control. But in some genres, it might not work so well for you.

Jazz, for instance, relies on the inflections of the voice and ‘sliding up’ to notes. Pitch correction could interfere with that. And it could also interfere if you predominantly sing rock music. You don’t want a voice to sound ‘over-processed.’’

However, most of the time, it is going to be an asset, providing you think you can benefit from using one. And if I am perfectly honest, most singers can.

An Important Consideration

The microphone you are using with the system is very important. No matter how good the Auto Tune system you have, if your microphone is not so good, you won’t get a quality vocal sound that you can process with auto-tune.

So, here are a few options that will work well with Auto-Tune systems across a range of price points.

Or, for more excellent microphone options, check out our in-depth reviews of the Best Live Vocal Mic, the Best Vocal Mics, the Best Dynamic Microphones, the Best Microphones for Recording Rap Vocals, the Best Condenser Microphones, or the Best Shure Microphones that you can buy in 2023.

Which of these Best Autotune Microphone Systems Should You Buy?

So many useful options are available, and the ones I tested for my review all suit a variety of potential uses. However, for me, I think the idea of combining pitch control within the facilities of a mixing desk is both a useful and productive idea.

Therefore, if I had to choose would therefore go for the…
