When we found out we were going to get our hands on some high-quality earphones for reviews; we were ecstatic!
Well, maybe not all of us. Some of the folks around here actually seem content with their $10 plastic Amazon earphones. Honestly, those cheapo earphones do sound sort of… OK. And if that’s all you want in a listening experience, maybe you can stop reading now.
But if bass makes you shudder and treble makes you tremble, you simply need more. Well, here’s more – our review of the 1MORE Quad-driver earphones!
In the past few years, audio tech companies have been absolutely killing it. 1MORE is no exception. You might think everything that can be crammed into an earbud has been. But you’d be wrong. 1MORE continues to push the boundaries of engineering and shock us with the sound quality they can push out of such a tiny little space.
In 2017, 1MORE came out with their Triple-Driver Earphones, squeezing three drivers into each earpiece for a real WOW listening experience. So when the Quad-Driver In-Ear Earphones dropped, we just had to hear what 1 more driver could do.
Suffice it to say; we were in no way disappointed…
The Quad-Driver In-Ear Earphones
Cracking open the box, the first thing that strikes you is that these things are classy. Heck, even the box is worth keeping around! You’re getting a pair of top-end earphones that look sleek and slick. And we’ll talk all about the quality in a minute. But we were impressed with all the goodies that come along for the ride.
Laid out in that smooth packaging are no less than nine sets of ear tips in different sizes, both foam and rubber. Let’s be honest – you’ve only got one set of ears, right? Sure some people’s left and rights might not be the same size. But once you find the size that feels best, you’re probably never going to change the tips ever again.
That said, the point is the variety they’ve given you. Some people, especially women, have a hard time finding smaller tips that feel comfortable. So you have to hand it to 1MORE for thinking of their range of customers.
One is for those weird double-hole jacks they have on airplanes. The other lets you supersize to a ¼-inch jack, the kind you find on pro stereo equipment. We even plugged this into a guitar amp’s headphone output, and it sounded great!
On top of that, you get a snazzy hard leather carrying case for safe and easy transport. The 1MORE branded shirt clip tossed in is probably more for marketing than practical use. None of us has ever used a shirt clip with earphones, but it might come in handy when jogging.
But what about the earphones themselves???
The quality of the construction of these earphones is clear from the start. This is not your cheapo plastic pair of buds, folks! You’re getting precision-milled aluminum earphone casings that are going to be tough and durable for long-term use. And let’s face it, we’re not always kind to our earphones, stuffing them in bags and pockets and getting them snagged on just about everything.
A bunch of us tried the earphones, and the angle and shape combined with the choice of ear tips made these really comfortable for everyone. Seriously, no complaints.
Kevlar folks – we’re talking bullet-proof vests. They’re actually surprisingly lightweight, but still stiff enough to prevent tangling. We tried the tried and true pocket-stuffing test on these puppies, and they just refused to tangle, though we did get one mysterious figure-eight knot?
The connections are all properly reinforced. While these are the points where cables usually fail, 1MORE has done their best in keeping the connections strong but still sleek and sexy.
The control switch works with both Apple and Android devices. It can be used for volume or skipping tracks, and also taking calls. We tried a few calls to check the mic, and it was crystal clear. A lot of earphone mics pick up cable movement, but we didn’t hear any of that. Must be that Kevlar!
Our conclusion? The quality of this pair of earphones is absolutely up to the price point.
So what about the all-important… sound?
The Quad-Driver in-Ear Sound
As you read earlier, we tried out the 1MORE Triple Driver earphones and were wowed. How do the Quad-Drivers compare? We’ll try to explain without getting too technical.
While the Triple Drivers combined one dynamic driver with two balanced armatures, the Quad-Drivers added an extra armature. Uh, what does that mean?
Drivers are simply the part of the earphones that drive sound into your ears. Basically, most little earphones use a single dynamic driver, which is just like a little vibrating speaker. Your stereo uses a mix of different sized cones to give you a great range of tones.
Big woofers bark out the bass, and tiny tweeters tweet out the treble. But one dynamic driver simply can’t handle all the range that great music needs. They sound flat and dull, with no big bass feel and no sweeping highs.
These doo-dads are basically teeny tiny motors that turn electricity into sound waves. Because they’re tiny, they’ve been used in hearing aids for decades, allowing the hearing-impaired to pick up a wide dynamic range of sounds. They do exactly the same thing here.
Earphones For Music
Spreading the sound rage over four drivers lets you hear deeper lows, more-defined mids, and soaring high tones. We tried these earphones with everything from booming techno to sweeping classical music and everything in between. Again and again, we were super-impressed with the range and the clarity of sounds.
The Quad-Driver In-Ear Earphones are in your ears, and they do a really solid job in blocking out background noise. Obviously, some safety concerns have to be taken into consideration when you’re out and about. But with your eyes closed, you feel like you’re standing at the front row of a concert and not in our noisy office.
1MORE also points out that the wire used in the Quad-Drivers is made oxygen-free copper. This is supposed to keep the electrical signals pure and as true to the original as possible.
Have you ever dropped a cheap talking doll down a well? Yeah, worse than that. There were tears.
Earphones For Videos
Being an audiophile isn’t restricted to music in any way. These days, everyone is watching videos on their phones and tablets, usually at the same time. How annoying is it when you have to listen to someone else’s video leaking out of their earphones?
The design of the Quad-Drivers is really very effective for keeping your noise to yourself. Of course, when we blasted them to over-safe levels, there was some bleed out. But in general, we were quite happy with how they contained sound.
It’s a cliché, sure, but you could really and truly hear a pin drop through these things! If you’ve got a video or a movie with a quality audio track, the realism in the sound here is really incredible.
Well, this shouldn’t be a surprise. The 1MORE team’s Grammy Award-winning sound engineer tweaked the final balance of the sound output. It really does seem to be optimized to movies and TV series without sacrificing anything in the way of music. We’re not really sure how he did that.
THX certification assures audio-visual equipment to be of the highest quality and is used in movie theatres around the world. It’s when you hear that twinkle followed by a deep bass drop before your movie starts. And yeah, that’s how good these earphones sound.
Earphones For Different Devices
One thing that really stands out with the Quad-Driver In-Ears is that there is essentially no difference in sound between devices. When you buy cheap earphones that say “compatible with… everything”, sure that’s true. But sound quality can be really different if you listen to the same audio on a Samsung phone and an iPhone.
The 1MORE folks have included a chip to read the output device’s operating system. Then the Quad-Drivers adjust automatically for optimum sound.
So while we heard the tiniest differences when listening on OS and Android devices, the quality was still always great.
Wired Vs. Wireless
Of course, this was bound to come up. You’ve already had ample opportunity to try out wireless earphones. Why go back to the wire? Honestly, there’s no easy answer.
Wireless means freedom from snags. Wireless earphones are also inconspicuous – think boring meetings at the office! But really, are there any other benefits?
Wired earphones, on the other hand, have some strong plusses. You never have to worry about charging and battery life. There’s no possibility of Bluetooth interference and associated sound quality drop. They’re tied together like your mom tied your mittens, so you didn’t lose them at school.
Ultimately, it’s a preference. But if you’re really worried about snag, you can always run the wire inside your shirt. Unless, you know, you’re doing shirtless things. Ahem.
Putting The 1More Quad-Driver In-Ear Earphones To The Test
We take our job seriously. You can’t just try out a product and say it’s great. You have to run it through the paces to find out the extremes. What’s fantastic, what’s not, and what can be improved. We’ve already mentioned a few of the ways we’ve worked these earphones in.
Here’s what we found in brutal, graphic detail…
1MORE Quad-Driver in-ears Pros & Cons
- The price – not everyone wants to spend this much on earphones, but you’re not going to be disappointed here, and they are well worth the money.
- Superior sound – crystal clear – deep, lush tones – nothing gets missed – This is truly surprising sound greatness wrapped up in the tiniest of packages.
- Quality construction – these things are built to last.
- No wire to ear sound transfer – the Quad-Drivers aren’t sweat-proof, and so might not be best for jogging. But if you do use them, you’re only going to hear your music.
- Sleek, sexy – these earphones look expensive, they are, so that’s the point.
- Low-quality videos – YouTube keeps getting better, but there are still literally millions of crappy sounding videos out there. Great earphones can’t make them sound better. In fact, some of us felt like it was worse to hear all the static and buzzing more clearly.
- We changed the ear tips many times because basically everyone in our office wanted to try the darn things – like 20 times. The protective inner screen of one of the earphones started to come loose, and we had to be careful not to tear it off when changing again. Really, though, the typical user will probably change only a few times to find the perfect fit. So this might not be a serious issue.
- The wires – yes, they are wired. But while you can’t totally prevent snag, you could always make use of the slightly cheesy 1MORE shirt clip to reduce it.
